Pool fence compliance

We know what the inspector is checking. So your fence passes the first time.

In Victoria, every pool and spa barrier has to meet the safety standard (AS1926.1) and pass a registered inspection. Most fences that fail were compliant when they were built — timber moves, latches wear, standards have tightened over the years. It happens to careful homeowners all the time. The fix is usually specific and small; the trick is knowing exactly what to measure.

What an inspector actually measures

The most common failure points, in plain terms:

  • 0mm

    Minimum barrier height

Measured on the outside of the fence. Built-up garden beds or a new deck beside the fence can quietly shrink this over the years.

  • 0mm

    Maximum gap

Under the fence and between verticals. Ground settles and timber shrinks, so a fence that once passed can drift out.

  • Auto

    Self-closing, self-latching gate

The gate must swing shut and latch on its own, from any position — including barely open. Worn hinges and tired latches are the single most common reason a fence fails.

  • 0mm

    Latch release height

High enough that a small child can't reach it. If the latch is lower, it needs shielding or moving.

  • 0mm

    Non-climbable zone

No pot plants, BBQs, furniture or horizontal rails within 900mm of the fence that a child could use as a step.

How we get you to a pass

  1. We check it like the inspector will

Same measurements, same standard. You get a plain list of what passes and what doesn't — no padding.

  2. We fix exactly what's needed

Often that's hardware, a gate rehang and closing a few gaps — not a whole new fence. If it does need replacing, we'll show you why with the tape measure.

  3. You book the inspection with confidence

The work is done to the standard the inspector certifies against, so there's no back-and-forth with council and no re-work.

Got a deadline from council, a settlement date, or just a letter you'd rather deal with this week?

We'll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a repair or a rebuild.

Fencing & decking

Solid work on the things you use every day

A boundary fence should be something you don't think about for twenty years. A deck should be where you actually spend your summer. We build both properly — measured square, set in concrete, finished clean — with the same attention to detail that gets our pool fences through inspection first go.

Fencing

New timber paling fence against a clear blue sky

Timber fencing

Treated pine palings, lapped or capped, on solid posts set in concrete. The workhorse boundary fence — straight, private, and built to see out its warranty and then some.

Colorbond fencing

Steel panels that don't rot, warp or need repainting. A clean modern line for new estates, and the practical pick where the old timber fence has given up for the last time.

Frameless glass pool barrier beside clear blue pool water

Glass pool fencing

Frameless or semi-frameless glass, installed to the pool safety standard from day one — compliant height, gaps and self-latching gate, without boxing in your view of the water.

Decking

Finished timber deck with outdoor furniture off the back of a house

Timber & composite decks

From a small landing off the back door to a full entertaining deck. Merbau or spotted gum if you love timber underfoot; composite if you'd rather never oil a board again. Either way the subframe is done right — that's what decides how long a deck lasts.

Deck repairs & restorations

Boards gone soft, bounce in the middle, stumps sinking at one corner. We'll tell you honestly whether it's a re-board, a partial rebuild, or not worth saving — and quote each option straight.

Gates & privacy screens

Side gates hung square so they still swing in five years, and slat screening where the neighbours' second storey looks straight into your yard.

Our work

Before and after, not smoke and mirrors

No staged reveals — just what the job looked like when we arrived and when we packed up. Drag the handle to compare.

BeforeAfter

Boundary fence replacement — thirty-year-old palings out, new treated pine on concrete-set posts.

New entertaining deck — the subframe is the part you never see and the reason it won't bounce.

The details carry the job — gate hardware fitted square is the difference between a gate that latches every time and one that fails an inspection.

Why Dalton

The same crew, the same standard, every job

We work to the standard, not near it

Pool fencing taught us to build to the millimetre, because an inspector will measure it. That habit doesn't switch off on a boundary fence or a deck — square, plumb, and set to last is just how the work goes out.

Quotes that hold

We measure on site, quote the job in writing, and the number doesn't wander afterwards. If we open something up and find a surprise, you hear about it before it costs you anything.

Local, and reachable

Based in the outer south-west, working Werribee to Melton. You deal with the same person from quote to final screw — and if something's not right after we leave, we come back and fix it.
